Young Writers Institute

One of WSIP's first commitments was to provide a summer writing program for high school students. From our work with incoming freshman at the university, we recognized that many students lacked confidence in their writing abilities or were genuinely underprepared for college writing. Determined to help bridge these gaps, the WSIP team created a summer program that reinforced the foundational elements of academic writing and introduced advanced concepts in innovative and engaging ways. Our aim was to provide deep and meaningful educational experiences that could encourage students to feel more at ease in their own writing practices as they returned to high school or made plans for college.
In the 2000s, we changed the name to the Young Writers Institute and added an online option. For a number of years, the program also included a companion course for middle and high school instructors. The most recent iteration of the program has been the Writing Personal Statements program.
