Karen Barto teaches workshops, tutors, and facilitates writing groups at WSIP. Karen holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching from the University of Arizona, with a major in linguistic analysis and a minor in psycholinguistics. An avid language learner, Karen began teaching French as part of her first M.A. in French and Francophone literatures, and later moved on to teaching English applied linguistics, English as a Second Language, and teacher training. In addition to teaching both graduate and undergraduate level writing courses, she has tutored in the Graduate Writing Institute at WSIP. Karen also designs and develops curriculum, including a course on graduate-level writing for international students and a teacher training program in English Medium Instruction, and is co-author of a leading textbook on second language acquisition. In the past, Karen has conducted psycholinguistic and linguistic research in syntax and phonetics. Her current research interests include second language acquisition, English Medium Instruction teacher training, and second language writing.
