Writing Institutes

WSIP offers writing institutes for university undergraduate and graduate students. We are focused on helping students hone their skills in writing as they prepare for successful academic experiences. Academic Writing in The Borderlands

January 2025 dates and fees to be announced. 

The program has two components: 

1. January: Workshops, writing sessions, individual tutoring

  • Monday:  Workshop
  • Tuesday: Mini-workshop and Writing Time
  • Wednesday:  Workshop
  • Thursday: Mini-workshop and Writing Time
  • Custom schedule: two, 1-hour individual tutoring sessions

The workshops will focus on issues related to academic writing, including an emphasis on important issues of positionality and integrity for scholars in the Borderlands. The writing sessions will provide you with facilitated time to work on writing projects. During individual tutoring sessions, you have the opportunity to discuss your writing and/or your writing questions and concerns with a writing specialist.

2. Tutoring in Spring 

Your participation in the program includes regular tutoring sessions throughout the spring semester. We will work with you at the end of the January workshop week to set up a spring schedule.

Borderlands is held online.
2024 Fees: $195/University of Arizona students; $230/non-students. 2025 fees TBA

 Graduate Writing Institute

Each summer for three weeks in June, WSIP offers the Graduate Writing Institute (GWI) for selected graduate students interested in improving or simply moving forward in their writing. The GWI helps graduate students complete advanced research projects, articles for publication, grant and research proposals, conference presentations, theses, and dissertations. We do not accept students who will be writing their comprehensive exams during the program. Students of various disciplines work on their writing by participating in the following activities:

  • Writing workshops 
  • Individual Tutoring 
  • Facilitated Small Group Tutoring
  • Writing Boot Camp

2024 Fees: $175 UA graduate students; $400 UA post docs or non-UA students. We will send you the link for payment when your application has been accepted.

Writing Boost!

Each summer before the fall academic semester begins, WSIP offers the Writing Boost! Program, a one-week institute for undergraduate and graduate students. The undergraduate track focuses on helping students prepare for or become more comfortable with the academic writing at the university level and includes. The graduate track focuses on helping students make progress on existing writing projects and develop ability to apply academic writing conventions. Both tracks include workshops, writing time, and tutoring sessions.
